CALAHONDA - SHORE DIVING UP TO 30 MTRS
Easy entry from the shore, shallow depths, long dive times and rock walls covered in marine life – what’s not to like about diving Calahonda on the Costa del Sol?
Located at the far end of the beach, where the cliffs drop directly into the Mediterranean, this dive site offers beautiful underwater scenery and excellent conditions for scuba diving near Marbella and Malaga. From this point we can easily explore the reef and enjoy two relaxed dives in one day, making Calahonda a great location for discovering the marine life of the Costa del Sol.
1. El Punto de Cerro Gordo (Fat Hill Point!)
The El Punto de Cerro Gordo dive follows a gently descending route where the base of the cliff meets the sandy seabed. This relaxed dive profile makes it an enjoyable way to explore the rocky coastline while scuba diving in Calahonda on the Costa del Sol.
As we follow the reef, the dive reaches the corner of the cliff at around 18 metres, where divers can either continue deeper to approximately 22 metres into the next small cove, or remain slightly shallower and return along the reef. The area is scattered with large rocks and boulders that create excellent hiding places for Mediterranean marine life, while the vertical cliff face above adds dramatic underwater scenery.
Divers exploring this area often encounter schools of juvenile fish, anemones and soft corals growing along the cliff wall, and occasionally electric rays resting on the sandy seabed.
2. Arrecife de Paso (Step Reef)
The Arrecife de Paso, or Step Reef, dive explores the reef located within the sheltered corner of the beach. The dive begins by following the seabed out to around 12 metres before turning back toward the reef, where a series of natural “steps” in the rock formations guide the route back along the base of the cliff.
This reef is often teeming with juvenile fish, making it an excellent location for observing Mediterranean marine life. Because the dive stays close to the cliff face, bringing a torch is recommended to search the cracks and crevices where many hidden species live.
With its interesting reef structure and abundant marine life, Arrecife de Paso is one of our favourite dive sites in Calahonda and is also a perfect dive for night diving, when many nocturnal species become active.
